Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
