British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
